Description

Excursion Length:  ± 4 hours (Moderate Walk)

“Levada” is a Portuguese word coming from the verb “levar”, which means to carry, and is roughly translated as “carriageway", but more correctly defined as mini-canal. These narrow water carriageways deliver precious water along far distances to banana plantations, vineyards, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, as well as to hydro-electric power stations dotted around the island. The levadas cross the mountains and cover a total distance of 2.400Km and date back to as far as the 15th century.

The Valley of Rabaçal  is one of nature's masterpiece, which is situated at the plateau of Paúl da Serra. You will walk along our native forest. After a while, you will get to a small lake at the bottom of a cliff. From this cliff, 25 natural springs cascade into the small lake.
